Sorry to hear that the Yorkdale Apple store employees didn’t have an acceptable answer for you. But really, they’re not in the loop on product developments, just like other companies (GM, Canon, Heinz, etc.). You would never ask a supermarket employee what new flavor of Pop-Tarts are coming out, would you? I was also disappointed that you painted the entire store staff with the same brush. Certainly some of them are not “teenage,” just like some of them aren’t “snotty.” It seems as if you were ready to write all this before you even visited the store.

As a former Canadian Apple Retail employee, who left quite recently as i moved out of Toronto, NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING about the iPhone, you can hold a gun to our forehead and we still wouldn’t know. If you know anything about Apple, you’ll know that they like to keep things top secret, even managers at the store do not know about future product releases and nobody in Apple Retail in Canada knows anything about the iPhone and when its coming and why it hasn’t been released.

And as for Canadians going to the US to get their iPhones, Canadian Apple retail employees don’t care, if it breaks your out of luck and nobody can do anything for you anyways.

Aggressive arrogance seems to be the de facto attitude taken by the young men who staff the computer sections of the Apple and big box stores. Combined with a stunning lack of product knowledge, they manage to make purchasing anything a chore, which is a curious business model.

You vastly overestimate how much information Apple gives these employees. I worked for Apple for 6 years; 2 years at “corporate” before Apple went Retail, and then 4 years as a Mac Genius.

Suffice to say, unless Apple actively wants the employees to share the information, or the information is of vital need for the employees to complete their job duties, they don’t know anything.

I only knew about the bare _existence_ of a product release, and not even the specifics or time line, exactly once. Ever. And that was entirely by mistake: someone at Corporate accidentally mailed some marketing materials to the store, care of me personally, instead of the Store Manager, and failed to mark it as confidential. The net result is that I learned of the very first generation 17-inch PowerBook’s existence a full 12 hours ahead of the rest of the world.

And while you might think that the iPhone is different, and that surely Apple would have shared this information with them because they’re getting so many questions about it… you’re just flat out wrong. I probably had to answer about 50 questions a day, personally, about the Intel Macs between Apple’s announcement and their final ship date, and despite this and its apparently critical importance to the Mac community, during those months I had exactly zero more knowledge about the situation than any Joe Q Random off the street.

Also, I don’t know about other stores, though, but I worked in 2 Apple Stores full time, and another 2 sporadically during my time at Apple, and while we had a few of the “snotty, arrogant” teenager types, most of my coworkers were dedicated and career oriented, many worked in the stores part time to supplement their incomes or smooth out their cash flow, with several being successful regional musicians, graphic artists, and even a doctor doing it “just for fun” and an IT director for a world-class medical center who worked there because he was semi-retired and wanted something to do.

They are really told nothing at all. Apple is at the bottom of the totem-pole of information.
