London Public Library Free Wifi

I’m sitting in the London Public Library right now and I’ve discovered that they have free wireless internet access. Its not bad access either, and from their website, they claim that it covers the entire building.

Wireless Speed

The only disadvantage is that its “filtered” But since I’m not the kind of person that wants to look at questionable material in a library that does not bother me. I’m sure personal privacy people don’t approve.

As I recently found out and twittered about, the library wireless is apparently only accessible while it’s open. I was lucky to find a very low-strength unsecured connection for a few minutes, but it might not be there another time. I’ve emailed an inquiry to library CEO Anne Becker (Anne.BeckerATlpl.london.on.ca) and will likely blog the response if I get one.

Thanks for that investigative wifi sleuthing Greg! Let us know what Becker says. It’s not unusual for internet access to be shut down when the store is closed. However since the library is filtered I can’t see any harm from 24/7 access.

The difference here of course, is that the library Internet is publicly paid for, and it was one of the justifications given for the millions of dollars which were invested in building a new central library. So far I’ve simply had one response from Ms Becker: “Library wireless access/service is available from 8:00 am till closing. We only offer access to the catalogue and the web site on off hours.” I’ve asked for an explanation and whether or not it was a Board decision. More details when they become available.

I thought it was available at all their libraries?

My guess as to why its limited is because of wingnuts like this

Pretty sure that use isn’t covered in their mandate…

How can you kill that which has no soul?

Wait so this is not about London as in UK London … that could be made a little clearer.
